Today's health care needs are constantly changing and the demands on individuals, families and non- profit health care organizations trying to meet those needs can sometimes be overwhelming. The Craven Regional Medical Center Foundation strives to help meet those needs through funding support and grants for health care in our tri-county communities. These grants helped fund support for a variety of health care needs and programs.
Since 1998, when we first started making grants, the Craven Regional Medical Center Foundation has funded programs for diverse health care needs that might otherwise have been overlooked. This support, totaling more than $2.2 million, has made a positive impact on the health of our communities.
Indigent Care: Totaling $605,669
- $314,970 to MERCI Clinic to fund its building acquisition, made possible by a grant from the Duke Endowment; in addition to $50,000 to provide funding for staffing needs;
- $84,811 to the MERCI and HOPE Clinics for care of victims from Hurricane Floyd’s flooding;
- $30,000 to the Hope Clinic to provide funding for staff support and launch a Diabetes Clinic & Education program;
- $16,159 through the Coldwell-Banker Going Home Fund and the Craven County Community Foundation to aid patients from Craven, Jones or Pamlico counties in need of transportation for follow-on medical services and immediate prescription medications;
- $40,286 to MERCI Clinic to fund grants supporting diabetes education, diagnostic equipment and to upgrade medical service software needed to process patient records and pharmaceutical requests;
- $7,148 to MERCI Clinic for eye and dental care program support;
- $51,513 to HOPE Clinic for diagnostic laboratory tests which help monitor their patients’ responses to prescribed medications, treatment regimes and monitoring compliance especially those patients with diabetes and hypertension.
- $3,638 to HOPE Clinic for purchase of Hemoglobin A1C machine to monitor diabetic patients’ blood sugar.
- $7,144 to Phoenix House, Inc. for patient assessments and education for those recovering from alcohol and substance abuse.
Family & Child Health: Totaling $903,127
- $17,184 to Craven County Public School District to launch and support the “You Can Do It!” Program for youth at risk;
- $2,942 to families with critically ill children to help with unexpected expenses for treatment;
- $19,194 to Chrysalis Counseling Center to expand the family counseling and mental health services;
- $15,000 to the American Red Cross for Advanced Cardiac Life Support training for instructors for 9th graders and an HIV education program for the Hispanic population in the tri-county area;
- $36,000 to Healthy Carolinians 2000 for a Director to oversee efforts to determine and address health care needs in our tri-county communities;
- $5,000 to Mission Triangle E to support its grassroots efforts to reduce smoking, improve nutrition and increase exercise among the citizens of the Duffyfield neighborhood;
- $5,000 to Jones County Health Department to support Healthy Carolinians Programs;
- $27,993 to Jones County Health Department to hire a grant writer to seek funding for its health educator programs in the County’s school district;
- $13,500 Craven-Pamlico Asthma Coalition to provide Asthma management workshops & home visits for patients and family members to help prevent or minimize the severity of their asthma attacks;
- $181,707 made possible by a grant from The Duke Endowment to support Jones County Health Department’s “My Body is a Temple” programs which teach self-esteem and intelligent decision making to all elementary students, self-esteem and intelligent decision making and a sexual abstinence curriculum to middle/high school students along with smoking cessation classes to middle/high school students and staff;
- $24,250 to Community Coalition Against Family Violence to support prevention education programs for faculty and children in the Craven, Pamlico & Jones County Schools;
- $15,250 to Community Coalition Against Family Violence for Crisis Line support/training and for advertising on community billboards;
- $12,400 to Promise Place for community education programs, contract therapy, program supplies and resources, and Family Nurturing Camp for families of domestic violence living in Pamlico County;
- $9,550 to Craven County Health Department’s “Take 10!” Program designed to link physical activity and academic learning objectives with a fun innovative curriculum; Upgrade CPR equipment;
- $42,560 allocated for a Diabetes Education Program made possible through the Craven Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Team Hatteras Endowment for Community Wellness. This four-class series coordinated by qualified Registered Nurses & Dietitians, ensures patients and family members receive direction in proper care and the resource information to effectively manage their diabetes. These free classes are offered in the CarolinaEast Medical Center’s Education Building;
- $3,785 allocated for a Gestational Diabetes Program for pregnant women which will teach self-care management skills to decrease the risk of developing gestational diabetes during pregnancy. These free classes are offered in CarolinaEast Medical Center's Education Building.
- $405,658 for a three year Diabetes Education Program expansion into Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties made possible through the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. Programs involve education, treatment, monitoring and follow-up for underserved diabetic patients to teach self management skills and avoid long termed complications from diabetes.
- $2,569 to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeastern North Carolina for Adult Mentor Training Programs;
- $9,391 to assist local families with increased expenses incurred from additional life support equipment, transportation, food and lodging required for critically ill children, made possible through the Nell Norwood Fund;
- $2,500 to Restoration Ministries working with Craven CARES to provide emergency food pantry items and client services to HIV/AIDS patients;
- $10,000 to Twin Rivers YMCA for updated health and physical education equipment made possible through the Craven Regional Medical Center Foundation’s Team Hatteras Endowment for Community Wellness;
- $5,000 to Activists for Community Transformation to support teen pregnancy prevention/reduction program in Craven County and surrounding areas;
- $36,694 made possible by a grant from The Duke Endowment to support HeartWorks of Pamlico County for a Health Educator for their “My Body is a Temple” programs which teach self-esteem and intelligent decision making to all elementary students, self-esteem and intelligent decision making and a sexual abstinence curriculum to middle/high school students along with smoking cessation classes to middle/high school students and staff.
Women’s Health: Totaling $100,058
- $49,136 made possible by a grant from the Duke Endowment; to support the formation of a Sexual Assault Resource Team, and the efforts of the Sexual Assault Resource Center and the Craven Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department to eliminate family violence, $10,250 of this grant went to the Craven Regional Medical Center to continue funding the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coordinator position;
- $29,050 to the Community Coalition Against Family Violence to continue to fund the Sexual Assault Resource Team and for educational programs to reduce violence against women and children and for counseling;
- $5,000 to the Council on Women to provide counseling services to victims of domestic abuse;
- $8,622 Craven County Health Department for breast and cervical cancer screening programs;
- $5,250 Craven County Health Department for cervical biopsies;
- $3,000 Local chapter of the American Heart Association for healthy heart education programs for women in the work place, “Coastal Carolina Go Red For Women.”
Senior Adult Health: Totaling $53,190
- $20,300 to the Senior Pharmacy Program to provide its participants with prescription medications;
- $15,000 for Adult Day Care Programs;
- $5,000 for eye care needs and glasses for seniors;
- $3,675 to Community Resources to fund resource manual of medical services available in the tri-county communities, and to assist in expenses to move from home into office space;
- $2,727 to the MERCI Clinic to begin a Retinopathy Clinic;
- $2,500 for the American Red Cross-Coastal Carolina Chapter for its Family Care Giving Program to help train volunteers & family members in safety, nutrition, general care, legal and financial issues;
- $3,988 for Health Watch First Alert to purchase home bound personal response systems.
Cancer Care: Totaling $345,529
- $310,000 for the “Building A Safe Harbor” Campaign to fund the Oncology Center addition at Craven Regional Medical Center;
- $10,411 to Hospice of Pamlico County in support of bereavement counseling;
- $230 for an elementary school student with leukemia;
- $2,252 for a new humor cart for the oncology unit at Craven Regional Medical Center;
- $1,000 to promote Breast Cancer Awareness during Oct. 2004;
- $13,508 through the Craven Pathology Fund for Cancer Patient Treatment to assist cancer patients who cannot afford their medications, medical supplies or transportation for treatment;
- $6,178 to promote Breast Cancer Awareness through the Craven County Health Department’s Mom, Daughter, Sister & Friend program. Free to females 14 and up. Teaches the importance of Breast Self Examination and regular breast & cervical screenings;
- $1,950 to promote “Paint the Town Pink” Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.
Heart Care: Totaling $9,405
- $6,000 to the Give Your Heart A Healthy Beat cardiac-health education program;
- $2,005 for Cardiac Rehab Library at Craven Regional Medical Center;
- $1,400 for HOPE Clinic King of Hearts heart monitor.
Craven Regional Medical Center: Totaling $203,848
- $102,430 for flood relief for hospital employees whose homes were destroyed by flooding;
- $89,175 for a solarium adjacent to the Oncology Unit;
- $1,950 for new telemetry equipment and professional education;
- $10,293 to purchase transparent windows for the Oncology Unit.
Joseph Hageman Memorial Nursing Scholarship: Totaling $14,500
Scholarships awarded to nursing students from Craven, Jones or Pamlico County pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
- $2,000 scholarship awarded in 2007
- $2,000 scholarship awarded in 2008
- $4,500 for two scholarships awarded in 2009
- $6,000 for three scholarships awarded in 2010
Craven Community College Foundation: Totaling $11,852
- $11,852 to build a simulation laboratory and training facility for nursing students.
Radio Reading Service: Totaling $2,788
- $1,200 for blind and visually impaired to have audio information read allowed from local newspapers and other printed public service media;
- $1,588 for special frequency radios and equipment for visually impaired.
To date, a total of $2,249,966 in grant support has been provided by the Craven Regional Medical Center Foundation to help meet the health care needs of individuals, families and other non-profit health care organizations in Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties.
